This is a photograph of a work in my own collection of original German folk art from the 1920s and 1930s.  Each piece is a depiction from German folk tales.  They are fret work, sawn using templates on a jigsaw from wood wafers, thin plywood, or mat board.  They are then hand painted.

Such works are known as Hellerkunst or Mertens Kunst, etc.,
based on the shop in which they were created.
